paul_goodman

Paul Goodman Changed My Life (Jonathan Lee, Kimberly Reed) will be the first documentary about Paul Goodman, the late social critic, poet, philosopher of education, or, as he called himself, "man of letters in the old-fashioned sense." His ideas helped lay the foundation for the student activists and anti war movements, gestalt therapy, gay rights, and early environmental urban planning.

Premiered NYC Film Forum October 19, 2011!

By A.O. Scott, NYT 10/18/11

“Paul Goodman Changed My Life” pays tribute to a man — poet, teacher, social critic, guru without portfolio — whose name was once a household word and whose books were talismans of intellectual seriousness and social concern. His current obscurity is something this documentary, directed by Jonathan Lee and including eloquent testimony from friends, family and admirers, is determined to overcome....I suspect that he would have approved of Mr. Lee’s film, and not only because it approves so unreservedly of him. “Paul Goodman Changed My Life” may not have that effect on every viewer, but it has a passionate, almost prophetic sense of the impact that a writer and thinker can have on his times and the future.

Awaken The Dragon (Dir.Liz Oakley)

One and a half million Americans will hear the words “you have cancer” for the first time this year. Thanks to advances in early detection and treatment many will survive and join the ranks of over 10 million who are already considered survivors. However, the toll taken by both cancer and its treatment leaves many facing challenges far greater than mere survival. Awaken the Dragon, a 90 minute documentary, examines how one small group of cancer survivors is facing these challenges with the courage and ferocity of an immortal creature. They prove that there is hope for a full life after cancer… and an even better life for those who have awakened their slumbering powers.

ONE LUCKY ELEPHANT (Director Lisa Leeman, Producer Crossover Productions, Co-Produced and Scored by Miriam Cutler)

OLE_LAFF dos_logo

One of 18 films chosen by the American Documentary Showcase to represent the US State Department with documentary diplomacy abroad.

The World Premiere of “One Lucky Elephant” at the L.A. Film Festival played to sold-out crowds and attracted Lily Tomlin, Academy Award-winning director, Kathryn Bigelow and actress Persia White (“Girlfriends”).One Lucky Elephant begins with circus producer David Balding’s realization that Flora, the orphaned African elephant he adopted and made the star of his circus, is tired of performing. What unfolds is a nine-year odyssey to find Flora a good home. Caught between the human and animal world, Flora epitomizes the harsh reality elephants face in our expanding man-made world. Through Flora and David’s story, the film raises questions about our complex relationships with animals, for which there are no easy answers. One thing is certain: after watching this film, you will never look at an elephant in a zoo or a circus in the same way again.

"A parable of pachydermish proportions, "One Lucky Elephant" is a bittersweet story of man, beast and a very real relationship that makes helmer Lisa Leeman's docu the thinking person's "Dumbo" --and, coincidentally, one of the better kids' movies on the fest circuit. ... Miriam Cutler's score is tops, always moving and emotionally precise." John Anderson, VARIETY (read the whole review)

Co-Produced by Sara Nesson and Mitchell Bloch, and directed by Sara Nesson/Portrayal Films, Poster Girl is the story of Robynn Murray, a National Merit Scholar and all-American high school cheerleader turned tough-as-nails Iraq War machine gunner, who returns home to face an even tougher battle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

In 2003, Robynn Murray, a National Merit Scholar and an all-American high school cheerleader enlisted in the Army to a Civil Affairs unit focused on rebuilding Iraq. While helping the Iraqi people was her main goal, on Robynn's first day in-country she was re-assigned to machine gunner and made responsible for protecting her team from the turret of the Humvee. Promoted to sergeant, Robynn was featured on the cover of ARMY Magazine as a "poster girl" for women serving in first-time combat roles.

After her tour ended, Robynn became haunted by her actions in Iraq. Her tough-as-nails exterior cracked, creating a tailspin of anxiety, nightmares and panic attacks.

Shot and directed by filmmaker Sara Nesson, POSTER GIRL is an emotionally raw documentary that follows Iraq War Vet Robynn Murray over the course of two years as she embarks on a journey of self-discovery and redemption, using art and poetry to redefine her life.

family_affair

FAMILY AFFAIR (Directed by Chico Colvard/Produced by Liz Garbus) Examines resilience, survival and the capacity to accomodate a parent's past crimes on the road to satisfying the longing for family. Premiers at Sundance Film Festival 2010. At 10 years old, Chico Colvard shot his older sister in the leg. This seemingly random act detonated a chain reaction that exposed unspeakable realities and shattered his family. Thirty years later, Colvard ruptures veils of secrecy and silence again. As he bravely visits his relatives, what unfolds is a personal film that’s as uncompromising, raw, and cathartic as any in the history of the medium.

Driving the story forward is Colvard’s sensitive probing of a complex dynamic: the way his three sisters survived severe childhood abuse by their father and, as adults, manage to muster loyalty to him. These unforgettable, invincible women paint a picture of their harrowing girlhoods as they resiliently struggle with present-day fallout. The distance time gives them from their trauma yields piercing insights about the legacy of abuse, the nature of forgiveness, and eternal longing for family and love. These truths may be too searing to bear, but they reverberate powerfully within each of us. Read about the movie in IndieWire

THE DESERT OF FORBIDDEN ART (Directors Amanda Pope and Tchavdar Georgiev)

How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to mental hospitals or Gulags.

Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky. He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB. Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions.

Narrated by Sir Ben Kingsley, the film follows Savitsky's obsessive quest to protect this legacy, no matter what the dangers.

"Few Westerners have seen the Savitsky Collection, but when they do, a chapter of art history may need to be rewritten." -- Stephen Kinzer, The New York Times

The Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art named after I.V. Savitsky - also known, simply, as the Nukus Museum - hosts the world's second largest collection of Russian avant garde art (after the Russian Muserum in St. Petersburg). It is also home to one of the largest collections of archeological objects and folk, applied and contemporary art originating from Central Asia.

Premiers 2010 Santa Barbara Film Festival and screens soon after at Cinequest and the 34th Cleveland International Film Festival.
