Just got back from a week working with Filmmakers and Composers as an advisor at the Documentary Film Composers Lab at the Sundance Institute.  Had a fantastic week watching films in progress, hearing music in process, and taking in the incredible beauty surrounding the Institute.  Ambitious projects, inspiring filmmakers, and wonderful composers.  Can't wait to do it all over again!  Nothing like spending time with filmmakers, exploring how to work with a composer to enhance storytelling and increase production value in documentary films

This is my third year advising at the Sundance Lab, and I finally got to take a hike!

And I'll be on it!  Here are the details:

BMI and the Sundance Film Festival will present the twelfth annual composer/director roundtable, entitled “Music & Film: The Creative Process,” on Wednesday, January 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sundance House at the Kimball Art Center (638 Park Avenue). This event is open to festival badge holders, and tickets will be on sale to the public. Tickets and badges can be purchased online at festival.sundance.org/2010.

Focusing on the dialog and relationship between composer and director, the panel is a cornerstone discussion at the festival on the role of music in film. Topics to be discussed at the panel will include: what goes into creating a successful film score and what makes for an effective composer/director relationship?  These questions and others will be answered during this revered festival event.

Panelists scheduled to speak include Skateland composer Michael Penn and director Anthony Burns; Teenage Poparazzo composer David Torn and director Adrian Grenier; Smash His Camera composer Craig Hazen and director Leon Gast; Family Affair composer Miriam Cutler and director Chico Colvard; Climate Refugees composer Michael Mollura and director Michael Nash; Holy Rollers composer Mj Mynarski and director Kevin Asch; The Kids Are All Right composer Craig Wedren; Countdown to Zero composer and director of the Sundance Composers Lab Peter Golub; Austin Powers composer and Sundance lab advisor George S. Clinton; and March of the Penguins composer and Sundance lab advisor Alex Wurman.

The discussion will be moderated by Doreen Ringer Ross, Vice President, Film/TV Relations at BMI.

BMI has been an ongoing supporter of the film music program at the Sundance Film Festival as well as at the Sundance Composers Lab, which will complete its twelfth program in July and August 2010.

In addition to the panel, BMI will host its eighth annual Sundance Snowball on January 27 from 6-9 p.m. at the Sundance House. The event will feature a live audio/video mash-up performance by DJ Thomas Golubic´ (The Arbiters / SYNCHRONIZE / KCRW 89.9 FM). Thomas will spin custom-created audio/visual montages integrating footage from past Sundance winners, movie classics and art films from around the globe married to an eclectic supply of upbeat head-nodders and slinky dancefloor grooves.
